Stealing of the map "M.Z.I Riverlands"

Hey!
My name is Nicolas Petrisi, more known as ShinyPants on Warcraft 3 the Frozen Throne. I am the original maker of the map series M.Z.I (including M.Z.I and M.Z.I Riverlands) and the map Medieval Invasion. But not too long ago a person that goes under the name Lions_Blood or EchoOvSilence downloaded my map, edited it and posted it here without giving any proper credits or asking of permission and also kept the name of the map which now is "M.Z.I Riverlands FINAL". I have emailed him to change the name and give proper credits, cause I don't mind people making remakes, just if they give proper credits and change the name. But he refused and threatened me with taking over the name M.Z.I as a map series. And now I am asking you to please remove this rip-off version of my map to force him to change name of it (and hopefully give proper credit to me) to avoid confusion. Cause I've encountered several people thinking it was my map, "M.Z.I Riverlands", they joined when it really was the rip-off version "M.Z.I Riverlands FINAL". Many have even mistaken the map for mine and I do not want people thinking I made that monstrosity. So is it possible to remove the map "M.Z.I Riverlands FINAL" and all of it's updates from ENT to force him to change the name of the map. I do not want the map deleted from the face of the earth, merely change it's name. Cause if people want to play then so be it, I just don't want him to use my map name. Thank you!

P.S, as you can see on the uploads of all the current version of all "M.Z.I" maps, I am the maker of this series.

I dont really think its possible to just remove the map because if it were to be removed, people could still just uploading it again, and again and again.

Did he not change the name to include "Final" in the name? Furthermore, how do you expect him to give you credit for your map? In the title? Or does the map's loading screen / information says he is the creator of the map? ENT cannot regulate every single uploaded map to ensure that proper credit is given to the right person.

I do not think his goal is to usurp you. Else, he would have named his map "M.Z.I Riverlands 1.8.w3x" (1.8 being the next coming version). As a matter of fact, the map he made is mainly based off your map. Therefore, making a reference to it in the title / map name does seem to make sense..

I understand your concern, but in my opinion you are not going at it the right way. I would advise you to "sign" your map in a more "proper" way in the loading screen, including the name of the name / version of the map, the name of the developer (you), alongside a link to some repository or place wherein you list the updates of your map. As such, anyone who plays the map could easily notice (and confirm) who's version of the map they are playing. Furthermore, being the first one to update your maps on ENT's private hosting system is an advantage as those who host the map will notice who the uploader is.

In case you do not have your own repository, _and given the fact that your map will soon be auto hosted_ ENT could help you by providing a spot on the forum wherein you could publicize your map and updates. Take a look at the LTD Hell forum for example: viewforum.php?f=248

I also think there are ways for you to prevent your map from being edited. As such, you might want to have 2 versions of your map(s). One being open to editing, and the other, a protected version with its own "personalized" loading screen. Or simply protect your map(s) altogether from being edited at all.


As a matter of fact, though, ENT will not start playing mouse and cat with users who upload maps without properly crediting or naming their edits.

It's a difficult topic indeed. However, MMH does the same. There are no human resources left for that job and curating a map list is pointless for wc3 anyway. We should consider it map database and mappers should protect their maps properly.

Okey I see. Thank you for your answers! I will just have to protect all of my future maps unfortunately. Personally I don't really like the idea of having to do that since it's stalling the development of custom games for Wc3. But you are right, there isn't many options to go with. But thanks anyways!
