"There was an error writing to your hard drive"

Postby window789456 » Tue Jul 25, 2017 3:04 am

When I tried to connect to GProxy and other realms like Eurobattlenet and Europebattlenet, this error occured.

This happened after I switched my cracked Warcraft version from 1.26 to 1.28.2 (1.26 and 1.27 realms' connection work fine).

I tried to Run as administrator and the error still happens.

Each of my hard drives have at least free space like 2 GB.

When I switched back to 1.26, it required me to insert a valid CD-Key. So I copied a backup-ed cracked Warcraft folder and replaced them into the original Warcraft folder and things went back to normal.

I want to explore Warcraft 1.28 realms. Is there a way to fix this "error writing hard drive" problem ?

Well not 100% certain what your error is however, you can always try the following:

Navigate to the folder housing your installation file (Ex:// C:\Program Files (x86))
Locate your Warcraft III folder and right-click and click "Properties" at the bottom

After deselect "Read-only" so it looks like this
Properties.PNG
Properties.PNG (14.38 KiB) Viewed 2078 times

After click "Apply" and close the window

From here you'll open your "Warcraft III" folder, and right-click your Warcraft 3.exe to "Run as Administrator"

Hopefully that helps, and if didn't do let us know.

If you plan to use EuroBattle.net you'll need to use their custom launcher to connect to their server, so you may need to run that program as administrator instead.

I have done what you suggested and still have the exact same error.

Yeah.. I also forgot to mention some other errors I had from opening up Warcraft 1.28.

This dialogue came up after I opened Warcraft 1.28
(http://i.imgur.com/vTnX6y7.png)

After I pressed that "Ok" button, this bar thing came up and my PC froze like about 3 minutes. The bar didn't progress.

Then this empty dialogue box came up after those few minutes of frozen bar thing.
Left box: "Quit" = exit Warcraft
Right box: " " = can access into single player and LAN games but still have that "error writing to your hard drive" when connecting to realms.

I also mentioned in the thread that my Warcraft folder is downloaded and cracked . Is there anyone who uses Warcraft 3 1.28 cracked and doesn't have these kind of problems ? If so, can you upload to Mediafire and I will be very grateful. Still ain't sure if 2 players using the same CD-Key can connect and play different realms at the same time.

Since the difference between 1.26 and 1.28 is the location of the wc3-files, I'd guess that maybe (for whatever reasons) you don't have those write-privileges in your Documents-folder. Another possibility that comes to mind is that your windows-username has a non-typical letter in it. I had something like "Zwölf" und it killed the "ö" and also the letter after it "l", trying to find the folders under the username "Zwf". So if your account isn't an admin-account and wc3 trying to look in the Documents-folder of another user, then you would get that message too, as only admins can look into the folders of other users.

So check the two things: Windows-Username, Write-privileges in your Documents-folder (and WC3-folders in Documents too).

My windows username is "WindowsXLC". I'm the only user and also the administrator. I checked My Documents and there is that Warcraft III folder. Is it supposed to be almost empty like this ?

Yeah, that is normal. Only the data like maps/replays etc. are stored in there while the .exe and so on are still under C:\program files\warcraft III.
Are any of those folders "Read-Only" when you check their properties? (Unitil's screenshot as reference)

Yes, there's that "square" check mark on that Warcraft folder's properties (and all my computer's folder files have it too).

Or do you mean the "V" check mark? It doesn't have that as default.

So I unchecked that "square" check mark and hit Apply then OK. But it still reappears when I re-open back the file's property. Is this "square" check mark just a selection mark? Can you show me your file's default properties then.

Just checked my own folders inside the Documents\Warcraft III\ and they are all Read-Only too. Though please make sure that your user has full access to the folders.

I got German OS. "Sicherheit" = Security, "Vollzugriff" = Full Access

I just noticed that there is also a Warcraft folder in my Public Documents too.

Comparing to the Warcraft folder in my User-WindowsXLC Document, there is no actual difference of the folder contents.

But the permission values are different:

Maybe my Warcraft 1.28 update is executing that Warcraft folder in that Public Document all this time. If so, is there a way to redirect the Warcraft 1.28 update to my User-WindowsXLC document instead ?

The Publics' Warcraft folder does not have permission for the "CREATOR OWNER" value (Every other values have permission though). When I tried to change the permission for CREATOR OWNER, it automatically keep changing it back to no permission.

How to change access ?

I doubt that this is it, but if you wanna try, you can go to the properties of the folder again, change to "security" -> choose "Advanced" -> at the top it should say "Owner" and next to it should be either "Edit" or "Change". Change the Owner to your windows-name. After that you should be able to change the permission-settings.

Sidenote: That is also how you can edit your "hosts"-file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc (not relevant for this case, might just be interesting if you do other stuff as well).
