Leaving games is bannable- Your team is supposed to help you learn a game. As you pointed out. Don't leave team games.

So how long do I stay banned for? It seems unfair that I leave once and get banned with no warning. I know not to play that game again since people feel uncomfortable playing with new players.

Leavers are dealt with by the autoban system, which means no one made a request against you, nor did a moderator personally ban you.
Also, you are free to play any game as a new player. Everyone has to start somewhere, and if anyone decides to give you trouble, you could always use the !ignore command.

As ari said, autobanx is a bot and it bans people who leave team games (civ wars is a team game).
In the future, if somebody is insulting you /etc use !ignore. If they switch to whispering you, take screenshots and report them. Typically we don't ban for flaming in a single game but it somebody follows you or continues to harass you over several games then we would ban.
